The Miss Maryland competition is the pageant that selects the representative for the state of Maryland in the Miss America pageant. Sonia Amir Bowie, Miss Maryland 2000 In the year 2000, Sonia was awarded the title of Miss Maryland and represented the State of Maryland at the nationally televised ''Miss America Pageant.'' Her commitment to our nation's youth was evident as she proposed ways to implement more character building programs promoting positive peer pressure for the young people in our communities. She served as a spokesperson for these efforts addressing politicians, attendees at national youth symposiums, and guests at special galas and events aiding efforts of youth development programs. She used the college scholarship she was awarded to complete her Post graduate degrees from the University of Maryland and Georgetown University. Sonia has held various positions such Executive Director for a state Association, National Youth Services Director, Spanish Speaking Victim Witness Advocate for the State's Attorney's Office, Juvenile Counselor, Spanish language instructor, Pageant Coach, and Professional Motivational Speaker. Sonia’s dedication to the development of youth character building programs as well as for the enrichment of cultural language programs for youth, initiated her efforts in creating an after school Spanish language program for elementary age students in the DC Metropolitan area.
